2018 Scottish National Mixed Team Relay Championships

The sun was shining at Monikie Country Park on Saturday for the Mixed Team Relay event which included an ‘open race’ alongside the Championship race.

The race included a total of 28 teams with 11 competing in the Scottish Championship race and 17 entered in the open race. With water temperatures reaching an amazing 21 degrees, it was a wetsuit optional swim and the majority of competitors chose to take advantage of the potential of a faster transition by leaving the wetsuit off!

The Mixed relay format is always exciting to watch and with the fantastic weather and competitive racing, this year’s race definitely did not disappoint. The open race saw Edinburgh University Triathlon Club ‘Edinbro’s’ team dominate, finishing over eight minutes ahead of second place. Dundee Road Runners A finished in second place with Monifieth Triathlon Club’s ‘The Good, the Bird and the Uglie’ completing the podium.

In the Championship race, it was a brilliant start for East Fife’s ‘Living is a problem because everything is tri’ team with Brooke Gillies storming ahead in the swim and exiting the water in first place. Gillies continued her efforts through the bike and the run, handing over to teammate Craig Trewertha in first place!

Trewertha put in a solid performance but dropped into third place as he was passed by Robert Harrison, part of Monifieth Triathlon Club’s ‘Super MARI-o’ team who took the lead in the Championship race. Glasgow Triathlon Club’s ‘Glasgow Tri Hards’ team moved into second place with Lachlan O’Sullivan’s consistent leg.

Onto the third leg and Harrison handed over to Michelle Mackay who had a 41-second gap to Glasgow’s Amy Ritchie in second place. Mackay increased the lead performing well in all three disciplines creating a huge lead of almost five minutes. In third place, East Fife’s Elise Methven kept the gap to second place Ritchie at just over one minute, before handing over to teammate Robert Sparks to bring them home!

Andrew Merry took over for the Monifieth team and with such a large gap, Merry was able to complete the race without too much of a threat to his teams lead. However, the race for second place was on with Glasgow’s Craig Armour up against East Fife’s Robert Sparks. Sparks had a minute’s gap to close to Merry which he successfully did in the water, taking the lead heading into T1 and keeping it! The Championship race finished with Monifieth Triathlon Club in first place, East Fife Triathlon Club in second place and Glasgow Triathlon club in third place.
