Age Group Stories: Scott Robertson10th Aug 2018 | Written by Carolyn Reid
The Moment has arrived as International competition returns to Strathclyde Park with the Glasgow ETU Triathlon European Championships! The Championships include an Elite Men and Women’s Olympic distance race, a Mixed Team Relay and Age Group Sprint distance events.
Among the British Age Group athlete’s aiming for success in the Championships is Edinburgh based athlete Scott Robertson. A member of the Hartree JETS Triathlon Club, Scott had never ridden a road bike before he began taking part in Triathlons just three years ago and is now aiming for a top-ten finish in his 30-34 Age Group on Saturday!
We got the chance to catch up with Scott at the Scottish Sprint Championships to chat to him about how he got into Triathlon and what he loves about Age Group racing!
How and when did you get into Triathlon?
For many years I wanted to participate in a triathlon but work and living circumstances prevented me from owning a bike. I used to swim as a teenager with Midlothian Swimming Club which has set me up well for triathlon, and after University, I started running half marathons as something to keep me fit. The only thing missing was the bike! When I moved to Edinburgh in 2014, I was finally in a position to buy one. I competed in my first triathlon at Tranent Sprint Tri in March 2015 and from that point on I was hooked!
How did you get into Age Group racing?
The more I competed, the more I started to see fellow competitors wearing GB Trisuits. I wanted a piece of the action, so I got in touch with Joel Enoch of the Hartree JETS who believed that I had the capability to be a British Age Grouper. Without his encouragement and belief, I may never have achieved my dream!
What is the best thing about being part of the Great Britain Age Group Team?
The team support is just immense! Everyone in the team is so encouraging and it’s such an amazing thing to be a part of.
Why should people be encouraged to consider Age Group racing?
When I started Triathlon, I had never ridden a road bike. Three years down the line and I’m an international athlete! I saw people in GB kit and never thought in a million years that I would have any. It’s an experience like no other to get to represent your country. There’s never any harm in putting your name forward to be an age grouper. You never know – you could be one too!
