Coach Development Award – Craig Trewartha

22nd Nov 2020 | Written by Triathlon Scotland

Our Coach Development Award winner, Craig Trewartha, took his first step into triathlon as a participant in East Fife Triathlon Club’s ‘Give it a Tri” initiative in 2016. Joining as a complete beginner and in particular a weak swimmer, he battled with and finally conquered the swim element and then went on to complete his first event at the East Fife Triathlon alongside others who had been part of the project. He had well and truly caught the triathlon bug and went on to complete another…and another….

Throughout the ‘Give it a Tri’ initiative and on joining the club it was clear Craig was a great support to others, with an ability to instil confidence in even the most nervous of characters. The club encouraged him to consider coaching and after being particularly enthused by the club’s junior section and how it could develop he completed his Level 1 qualification in 2017.  However, it was not long before Craig began to coach at the adult section as well, regularly taking turbo sessions, S&C and running sessions in addition to his key role with the junior section. Enjoying his coaching so much, he progressed to complete his Level 2 last year.

Craig has a love of learning and since joining the club’s coaching team he has committed a lot of his time to additional coaching CPD in pursuit of delivering added value where he can, something the club really benefits from. He undertook the British Triathlon Strength and Conditioning CPD module in December 2017 which inspired him to begin to run Craig’s Friday Night Circuits for the entire club. Throughout 2020 Craig has continued to develop his practice and became a familiar face during lockdown and beyond as part of Triathlon Scotland’s online Coaching Community.

Shortly before lockdown Craig was successful in his application to join the team of Scottish Academy support coaches and although the squad’s training and competing season was curtailed Craig has still been able to support the delivery of two day camps involving the athletes. He also continues to coach weekly in St Andrews with East Fife Triathlon Club junior section where he supports and inspires athletes from the ages of 7-17.

Craig is a maths teacher in his day job and is a natural with the young triathletes, despite managing to slip a maths lesson into every training session he can! He is logical and can break skills down into easy to manage sections which helps athletes manage the task in hand.  However, he is also really creative and his sessions are always fun and imaginative which his participants love and helps them remain engaged and responsive to their training.

Elise Methven, East Fife Triathlon Club’s Junior Section Head Coach, said:

“Craig doesn’t know how much he has done for our junior section. He is such a perfectionist that he will never stop learning and developing as a coach and this can only benefit our junior section.”
