There are currently three levels of triathlon coaching qualifications available for candidates to complete. Qualifications are established by the UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC) and delivered in Scotland in partnership with British Triathlon.
UKCC Triathlon Level 1
Completing the UKCC Triathlon Level 1 qualification will prepare coaches to assist in the delivery of coached triathlon sessions and to deliver individual sessions.
It is a competence-based qualification, with informal assessments for each module and practicals for swim, bike and run sessions. A formal assessment on the final day sees candidates deliver a 10-minute coached session off a session card. Candidates also complete online learning tasks prior to starting the course and throughout the training to support their learning. The completion of these tasks is also part of the final assessment alongside the practical components.
Candidates should be aware that the course learning takes place over 8 weeks and they should be prepared to do a good amount of independent study in the 4 weeks prior to the course starting and throughout the course itself.
Candidates preparing to coach children or vulnerable adults will also receive a Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) check as part of their training. Free to volunteer coaches, there is an additional charge for professional coaches.
UKCC Triathlon Level 2
The Level 2 course is also competence-based, with informal assessments during each module and practical assessments in two of the three practical elements from swim, bike and run. Level 2 coaches are qualified to plan, lead and deliver training programmes, and can supervise level 1 coaches.
Assuming the coach displays a level of competence in line with the assessment criteria, they will be able to work towards their Practical Coaching Experience. This involves planning, delivering and evaluating 8 group sessions. As at level 1, candidates will complete learning tasks prior to starting the course and throughout the training to support their learning. The completion of these tasks is also part of the final assessment alongside the practical components.
Candidates should be aware that the course learning takes place over 6 months and they should be prepared to do a good amount of independent study in the 4 weeks prior to the course starting and throughout the course itself.
UKCC Triathlon Level 3
Designed for individuals who are dedicated to coaching and want to improve both their theoretical and practical coaching skills. Level 3 coaches are qualified to plan and deliver one-to-one training programmes.
The course is interactive and involves group discussion, presentations and practical coaching experiences in all three disciplines, further developing the acquired Level 2 knowledge and introducing you one-to-one coaching. Topics such as the interdisciplinary nature of sport science, periodisation for coaching on an inpidual basis and the delivery of field-based testing methods are introduced while also developing decision making skills in relation to a number of role play scenarios.
