Rankings

A little healthy competition never hurt anyone and triathlonscotland's rankings system ensures it can be a rewarding experience. Our rankings system rewards consistent performance by our members who hold a race licence over the course of the season, with recognition across the many types of events.

Ranking points are awarded in:

  • Sprint triathlon events, divided into the North, Central and South regions
  • Standard triathlon events
  • Cross triathlon events
  • Open water events
  • Duathlon events
  • Youth Aquathlon events
As well as counting towards an individual ranking, your points are added to the race for the coveted Club Rankings Champion.  The 2011 rankings results have now been calculated, to see the results, click here.  Read on for 2012 rankings information.

Which events count?

To see which events count in each ranking series for 2012, click on the links below.  The Youth Aquathlon Series has 15+ events and kids aged 8-16 must complete at least four of the series' events to earn a final aquathlon ranking.  As a general rule, almost all Duathlon, Standard, Cross and Open Water events on the triathlonscotland calendar are included in the ranking series.  For the sprint series it's a little different. There are set events counting towards each regional sprint ranking. If, for example, you compete in both a north region sprint event and a south sprint region event, then you'll earn ranking points for each, so there is three times as many chances of becoming a sprint rankings winner!

Am I eligible for a ranking?

You can only earn points once you have a race licence.  To get a race licence you must be a member of triathlonscotland and your application must be made by 31 May.  Points cannot be claimed retrospectively.

For your scores to count towards your club ranking, it's vital you include your club name on your race licence application. Boost your club's chance of winning by encouraging your training team-mates and friends to buy a triathlonscotland membership before it's too late! If you have not notified triathlonscotland of your club, or if you change your club during the season, you must email admin@triathlonscotland.org so your hard-earned points can be awarded to the correct club.

Winner's recognition

Prizes for ranking winners are presented at the triathlonscotland annual awards.  Prizes will be given to the winning male and female in each category and also to the top club. Certificates will also be awarded to those finishing in the top three placings in their age category.

How the points are calculated...

Through some simple maths, ranking points are calculated based on the 40th percentile finisher, as the table below explains, where X is the 40th percentile finisher. Male and female rankings are calculated separately:

Competitor
Finishing Time (Minutes)
Points
A
60
100 x (90/60) = 150
B
80
100 x (90/80) = 113
X
90
100 x (90/90) = 100
C
120
100 x (90/120) = 75

The rankings are based upon the maximum points scored by each individual, regardless of the number of events completed, up to the maximum number of events for each category.

So if member A completes four sprint events and scores 427 points while member B completes six sprint events, his best five results give him 402 points. Member A will finish ahead of member B in the placings for the sprint rankings.

Ranking winners are those who score the highest number of points over four events.  Sprint events only count for sprint points, duathlon events only count for duathlon points etc.  Please note that you do not have to complete 4 or more events to win a ranking series - if you have the highest number of points across 2 or 3 events, then you can still be crowned the winner!

Club Ranking Points

Only events listed in the duathlon, standard and sprint ranking series listed above count towards club rankings.  The maximum points you can win for your club at each event is 20 and the minimum is 1.  To calculate the exact points, in each race, your finishing place within your age group is counted, and considered along with the total number of members in each age group at May 31. Points will be awarded based upon the 40th percentile of members in each age group (or as close as possible):

Age Group No. Members No. Scoring Point Difference
MJ1 10 4 5
MS 100 40 0.5
MV 60 24 0.8

This means that in a race, points will be awarded from a maximum of 20 in each age group, then down by the points difference for that age group. Every finisher will score a minimum of one point for their club, therefore, the more events you enter, the more points your club will earn!

Winner's results

Rankings winners will be awarded with their prize at the end of year awards bash and AGM. Results from the 2010 and 2011 rankings are available to download on the left hand side of this page.
