Tri Volunteers - Our Legacy
Volunteers are the lifeblood of any sport. Without at least a few generous individuals willing to commit to the formation of clubs, the organisation of races, the running of sessions or the responsibility for managing a governing body, sport does not exist. Triathlon in Scotland is no exception.
Through its 2010 Legacy Project, triathlonscotland sets out to learn more about its volunteers, with a view to understanding the depth and variety of their skills, offering new opportunities and training, where they are welcomed, and learning more about how best to recognise and reward those individuals who contribute so much to a thriving sport.
While events are by no means the only arena where triathlon volunteers are active, it is the staging of two major events on Scottish soil that provide the impetus for the Legacy Project. The World Duathlon Championships will require an army of volunteers for itÕs successful delivery, and while newcomers will be welcomed, there will be significant reliance on tried and tested experience from within our own volunteer workforce - information we currently do not record. Access to knowledge of our volunteer experience bank will be crucial in the run up to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow 2014. Major international events attract volunteers from all over the world. We want to demonstrate why our people merit selection to the roles that will make the Games a success!
More than willing helpers
We will build a profile of all our regular volunteers over the coming months. Our quick survey will take you no more than 5 minutes, is completed online and will give us more information on where your talents lie, what you are keen to learn and where you have no personal interest. This will help us target our communications and shape our training structures in future. We won't pass your details on to any 3rd party. Please help us by taking time to do this.

Self Development
Equally, volunteering is not just about helping us, it can also be a means to enhance your own life experiences and qualifications, whether to enrich your social life or bolster your CV. Please let us know if you are looking for voluntary work to develop a particular skill set. If your experiences are recorded, they can be used as reference material.
We have programmed a series of roadshow events at existing calendar events throughout the summer for 2010. The purpose is to promote triathlonscotlandÕs commitment to the development of volunteers and to offer real shadowing opportunities for individuals who are either new to the sport, or fancy a change of role or venue.
We want our volunteers to be visible to highlight their importance to the safe and successful delivery of any event. To thank new comers for their interest and to reward those so accomplished that they are prepared to share their knowledge ad experience with others.

If you are interested in receiving training at any of these events, please complete our volunteer survey and contact
volunteers@triathlonscotland.org, outlining which event you would like to attend and which roles you are most interested in shadowing.
There are development opportunities for more experienced officials also. Information on International Officials Pathways will be available shortly.
Reap the rewards
Recognition and reward of volunteers is sadly often neglected and while we can't promise we will get this right immediately, we do endeavour to learn from our own experiences.
We hope to build on last years Volunteer of the Year awards and will continue to endorse Scottish winners and support their attendance at the BTF event. It is our intention to open nominations for the Scottish awards early in the season to allow for more spontaneous nominations off the back of an outstanding event, a performance altering session or extraordinary feats of volunteering. We have big plans to add a twist to the presentation of awards and to bring recognition to the widest possible audience.
The 2010 legacy project is supported by sportscotland and though monitoring, promotion, training and recognition, strives to build a robust platform for the development of volunteers and volunteering to support the needs of triathlon long after Glasgow's Games.
If you have any questions about the legacy project or wish to find out further information about volunteering or officiating, please email
