Weekend Preview 10-11 March

9th Mar 2018 | Written by Carolyn Reid

The weekend kicks off on the Sunshine Coast with Beth Potter and Grant Sheldon racing in the Mooloolaba ITU Triathlon World Cup on Saturday. The sprint distance race will be the final race in preparation for both athlete’s appearances at the Commonwealth Games in April.

The race consists of a 750m swim at Mooloolaba Beach where athletes are set to battle the two-metre swells that are predicted to hit this weekend. Athletes will then complete the 20km bike and 5km run course on the coastal roads of Mooloolaba.

Closer to home, the first qualifier race for the 2018 Age Group Sprint Duathlon World Championships in Fyn takes place on Sunday. The Bedford Autodrome Sprint Duathlon is a draft legal race comprising a 5km run, a 20km bike section and a final 2.5km run where athletes interested in attending the World Championships have their chance to book their spot.

Taking place in Scotland on Sunday is the first aquathlon of the year! The Glasgow University Aquathlon includes both a sprint distance race as well as a GOTRI novice race. The race takes place in Bellahouston Park and involves a 750m swim followed by a 5km run on footpaths in the park while the GOTRI race consists of a 400m swim and a 2.5km run. With over 100 participants signed up to race across the two distances, it is set to be a fantastic event!

The Aboyne Duathlon was scheduled to take place on Sunday however due to the recent weather, the race has been postponed. The event will now take place on Sunday 29 April. Race organisers, Aberdeenshire Council, have given participants the option to either attend the rescheduled event, apply for a refund or transfer their entry to the Knockburn Duathlon on Sunday 1 April.

In other news, the first triathlon in the Aberdeenshire Series is only five weeks away! To find out more about the races and to take advantage of the multiple race entry discount, click here.
