What is triathlon

A triathlete enjoying the Durty TriathlonTriathlon is a race which combines swimming, cycling and running. There are different distances, from sprint right up to long distance, and events for all ages and stages.

Duathlon is a run, followed by a bike ride then another run to finish, a great option for anyone who loves the wind through their hair, but doesn’t fancy getting it wet!

Aquathlon is very popular with younger athletes, combining swimming and running with no need to put the pedal to the metal.

Para-triathlon and para-duathlon provide the perfect platform for disability athletes to showcase their talent in a selection of disciplines. Did you know...Scotland has a world champion paratriathlete.

There are set triathlon distances, though these can vary depending on the course location:

  • Novice 400m swim + 10km bike + 2.5km run
  • Sprint 750m swim + 20km bike + 5km run
  • Standard (Olympic) 1500m swim + 40km bike + 10km run
  • Middle Distance 1900m swim + 90km bike + 13.1 mile run
  • Long Distance 4000m swim + 120km bike + 30km run
  • Ironman 3.8km swim + 180km bike + 42km run

How do I get started?

It's simple:

1)    Get kitted out with the essentials. For the swim, a hat is handy and goggles are a godsend. Wetsuits are also welcome, with many events comprising open water swims. A bike is an essential as is a helmet for the cycle while running shoes are a must. Then there are luxuries like cycling shoes and specialist running gear, but remember to get what you need then start saving for those second-shaving items!

2)    Join a club near you for training support and to meet new friends

3)    Join triathlonscotland for race and kit discounts, vital insurance cover and to show your support for our sport

4)    Pick an event which suits you and register with the race organisers
