Race Report | 2024 Scottish National Aquathlon Championships

30th Jul 2024 | Written by Pamela Sneddon

It was a glorious day for the Scottish National Aquathlon Championships held at Balloch Country Park on Saturday 27 July. The sun was shining, the water was still and the crowd were amazing.

It was an early start for the event with the Beastie cross triathlons participants taking to the start line ahead of the aquathlon championships, ‘The Bikeless Beastie’. The well established event, run by Lomond Swimming and Triathlon Club, played host to almost 100 aquathlon competitors.

Both open and female competitors set off together in a deep water start in beautiful Loch Lomond. In the female race, Jessica Heeps took an early lead, recording the fastest female swim time of 09:47, with Nicole Campbell 24 seconds behind, and Louisa Brown over a minute behind Heeps.

After a lightening transition, Heeps headed onto the run in 1st place and didn’t give up that lead to take the win. Even with the fastest run of the female race, it wasn’t enough for Campbell to catch Heeps, but it did secure her a fantastic 2nd place. Brown also held her ground and took the last spot on the overall podium.

In the open race, Cameron Kerr dominated the swim in a time of 09:33, ahead of Angus Lindsay and Adam Lewis. Lindsay stormed round the run course in the fastest run time of the day, but was unable to catch Kerr who’s exceptionally quick transition and strong run kept him in pole position to the finish. Lindsey finished behind Kerr to take 2nd place.

The race was on for 3rd. Exiting transition in 7th place, Barry Sturrock had a podium place in mind. His blistering run saw him pass four of his fellow competitors to secure 3rd, and a place on the overall podium.

Congratulations to all participants that took part in the event.

A big thank you to the event organisers Lomond Swimming & Triathlon Club, and all of the spectators and volunteers who helped out on the day.
