Individual women’s and men’s events (5 April)
In the Commonwealth Games Triathlon competition, each nation is allowed to enter a maximum of three men and three women for the Individual events, from which it then selects two men and two women to combine for the Mixed Team Relay.
Both the individual women’s and men’s events were a combination of a 750m open water swim, 20km cycle and 5km run completed in immediate succession.
The competition was a finals phase only with transition areas positioned between the swim and cycle segments (T1), and the cycle and run segments (T2). These areas were used by athletes to rack bikes, performance clothing and any other accessories essential for preparing for the next section of the race.
Mixed Team Relay (7 April)
This innovative event saw athletes complete a super-sprint triathlon. The Mixed Team Relay teams consisted of four athletes: two women and two men. Each athlete was required to complete a course of 250m open water swim, 7km cycle and 1.5km run, before tagging their team mate. The Mixed Team Relay race order was: female – male – female – male.
Paratriathlon PTWC women’s and men’s events (7 April)
In the Commonwealth Games Paratriathlon competition, each nation was allowed to enter a maximum of two men and two women.
The Paratriathlon was a combination of a 750m open water swim, 20km hand cycle and 5km racing wheelchair completed in immediate succession. For the cycling segment, athletes used a recumbent handcycle and for the run segment, a racing wheelchair. The competition is a finals phase only. Handlers could help athletes transition from one discipline to the next.
In the PTWC class there were two sub-classes (H1 and H2) and the classification was run with a compensation time (staggered start). Men and women compete in the same event, although medals were awarded to the first competitors to complete the course in the women’s and men’s race.
H1 athletes have an advantage with a staggered start ahead of the H2 athletes. H2 men start 3:35 minutes after H1 men and H2 women start 4:48 minutes after H1 women.
