Information for Clubs

Membership of Triathlon Scotland affiliated clubs by athletes with a disability is growing year on year.  To ensure that your club offers disability athletes an inclusive and friendly place to train, we recommend the following:

  1. Ensure your club offers a welcoming environment for all new members.
  2. Provide information on your website and club materials that explain how to get involved with club sessions.  Do people know your club is there and open for business regardless of ability?
  3. Be sensitive to diversity and be prepared to make adaptations as required.
  4. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!  Disabled athletes know their disability and what they can/can’t do better than anyone and can offer your club and coaches valuable information on their specific needs.
  5. Be aware of the access to your club training facilities – are they accessible for disabled people and does the venue have any specialist equipment?
  6. Both Triathlon Scotland and Scottish Disability Sport offer various disability inclusion training.  Ensure someone from your club has had some training and can support the club become more inclusive.
  7. Use the Inclusion Club Hub (link below) to assess how inclusive your club currently is and whether you need to make any changes.  Use their resources to support your club’s development.
  8. If you are a race organiser be prepared to talk to disability athletes wanting to enter your race and know what adaptations are possible on your course.  Ensure that your event materials include information for disability participants so they know to contact you to discuss their needs prior to entry.

There are some great examples in triathlon where clubs are catering for a number of disability athletes.  To find out what they are doing and take some inspiration for making your club more inclusive, read our West Lothian Triathlon club case study:
