Environment & Sustainability

Scotland is one of the most beautiful and scenic locations in the world and we are extremely fortunate to have it as our playground to train and compete in. It is our responsibility to protect the natural landscape that our sport takes place in, so we can continue to reap the benefits.

Why are we doing this?

The Climate Change (Emissions Reduction Targets) (Scotland) Act 2019 sets targets to reduce Scotland’s emissions of all greenhouse gases to net-zero by 2045 at the latest, five years ahead of the rest of the UK. We all have a social and environmental responsibility to contribute to this goal, and it will not be achieved without collective effort across all corners of society.

Extreme weather is occurring more regularly, and global temperatures are rising. Without intervention, climate change will continue to affect our land, biodiversity, rivers and coastline. While this is concern for all of society, we know this will also have a specific impact on our sport:

  • Our training environment will be affected by changes to our natural ecosystem
  • Event cancellations due to adverse weather will become more likely
  • Higher temperatures will increase the likelihood of algal blooms that will affect our ability to swim safely in open water
