Race Report | 2025 Scottish National Standard Distance Triathlon Championships

9th Sep 2025 | Written by Pamela Sneddon

Knockburn Loch came alive this weekend as athletes from across Scotland gathered for the Scottish National Standard Distance Triathlon Championships, which also served as a qualifier for the 2026 World Championships. Hosted by Fleet Feet Tri and sponsored by Bancon Homes, the event delivered a day of racing, community spirit, and fun.

After a misty drive over the Cairn O’ Mount, athletes were greeted by clearer conditions at Knockburn, though the wind and rain built as the day progressed. The loch measured 16 degrees, making wetsuits optional. The race began on schedule, with swimmers setting off to the stirring sound of several pipers. In total, 165 athletes lined up at the start.

The course challenged competitors with its varied terrain and technical demands:

  • 1.5 km open-water swim in Knockburn Loch
  • 42 km cycle, spanning three loops of rolling countryside roads
  • 10 km run, over mixed trails and paths

In the open race, Angus Lindsay set the pace from the start, leading out strongly in the swim to take an early advantage over Robert Harrison, Colin McMorrin, and Alex Hodge. The bike leg proved decisive, with powerful riding from the frontrunners allowing Andrew Scott, recording the second fastest bike split (01:06:02), to move into third place. On the run, Lindsay, Harrison, and Scott maintained their positions with assured performances, securing the podium places for the day.

In the women’s race, Ella Chalmers set the early pace, clocking the fastest swim of the day (00:22:34) and exiting the water alongside Alice Gray, Abigail Bainbridge, Ailie McGowan-Bolton, and Molly Smith. The bike leg reshuffled the leaders, with Bainbridge moving narrowly ahead of Gray, while Lyndsey Henderson and Lucy Donaldson also came into contention.

The decisive stage came on the run, where Gray’s quick transition allowed her take the lead and with a strong and consistent performance secured victory. Behind her, Victoria Reid delivered one of the standout performances of the day, surging from seventh at the start of the run to claim second with a rapid 00:40:36 split. Donaldson completed the podium, climbing from fourth to third place with a determined run.

The event was well supported by families, spectators, and the on-site café, which offered a place to shelter from the elements and enjoy refreshments until it was time to cheer in the competitors along the finish funnel. Volunteers and marshals helped keep the race on track, assisting with safety and logistics throughout the day.

Several athletes commented positively on the organisation of the event and noted the balance between the supportive atmosphere and the challenging nature of the Knockburn Loch course.

A huge thank you to Fleet Feet Triathletes for organising the event, the marshals, Technical Officials, volunteers, and of course, all the participants who made the day a resounding success.
