At Triathlon Scotland, working alongside British Triathlon, we place the utmost importance on the safety and wellbeing of all individuals involved in our sport. In line with this commitment, it is mandatory for all coaches, leaders and activators working or volunteering with under 18’s to obtain and maintain the Child Wellbeing & Protection in Sport qualification.
We firmly believe that safeguarding is a fundamental aspect of our values, and we strive to create an environment where the welfare of children, young people, and adults at risk is protected. We recognise that every person engaged in triathlon has a collective responsibility to ensure the safety and well-being of all participants. By adhering to these safeguarding practices, we aim to provide an enjoyable and secure environment where everyone can fully engage and thrive in the sport of triathlon.
All British Triathlon coaches, leaders and activators working or volunteering with under 18’s are required to attain a safeguarding qualification to allow us to maintain safeguarding standards to a consistent level across the sport.
If you do not complete and email your safeguarding certificate from the appropriate course listed below to coaching@triathlonscotland.org, you will not be sanctioned or insured to coach or lead activities with children until you meet our safeguarding requirements.
There is a three-yearly renewal on the qualifications which you will need to retain in order to be sanctioned as a British Triathlon coach, leader or activator.
What qualification do I need?
Due to the differences in legislation between England and Scotland, the courses are quite different and are non-transferable. If you have any questions regarding transferring Scottish equivalent safeguarding courses, please contact coaching@triathlonscotland.org.
- If you work or volunteer solely with under 18s then you need: Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport course
- If you work or volunteer solely with over 18s: No action required
- If you work or volunteer with both under 18s and over 18s then you will need: Child Wellbeing and Protection in Sport course
- Coaches, leaders or activators aged 14 to 17 are not permitted to coach, lead or activate unsupervised and therefore are not required to complete the safeguarding training.
If you have completed the correct qualification in the last three years, this remains valid and your current certificate can be emailed to coaching@triathlonscotland.org.
There is a three-yearly renewal on the qualifications which you will need to retain. Please keep a note of expiry date as failure to have a valid qualification will mean the coach will be unsanctioned and uninsured by British Triathlon until the safeguarding standards are met.
