Team Racing! | Weekend Review 10-11 August

Both team and individual racing was on the cards this weekend for many athletes across Scotland, with domestic racing taking up most of the spotlight.

Relay Wild Triathlon

Returning after a five year break, the Relay Wild Triathlon, organised by Perth Triathlon Club, welcomed back many of its regular participants to the race.

Organised as a fun relay format triathlon, the event brought together 32 teams and 128 participants from across Scotland to take part. Athletes competed in a 200m pool swim, a 5.8km road bike ride, and a 1.2km run in the grounds of Kilgraston.

The overall race was won by Team Chafing Dreams, who delivered four consistent performances and completed the race in 1:32:42. Finishing soon after were two teams from Glenrothes Triathlon Club, with Gels Angels coming in second and Supersonic OAP‘s taking third.

Kelso Sprint and Come&TRI Triathlons

The 2024 Borders Triathlon Series reached its halfway mark as the next race took place in Kelso.

Athletes from beginner to experienced levels took on either the sprint distance course or the Come&TRI course, which was half the distance of a sprint race.

Jamie McGowan claimed victory in the open race with a time of 1:18:36, followed by Graeme Tough in second at 1:20:17, and Sean Hadden in third at 1:22:05.

In the women’s race, Lesley Dunn was in top form, taking a comfortable win in a time of 1:26:26, over 10 minutes ahead of the rest of the field. Anna Pate finished second in 1:36:43, with Claire McWilliams close behind in third at 1:36:59.

Shetland Sprint Triathlon

The results are in after another fantastic Shetland Sprint Triathlon.

In contrast to last year’s drizzly weather, the sun peeked through the clouds several times throughout the day as athletes came together to compete in the event organized by Shetland Triathlon Club.

In the women’s race, Mia Padmanabhan claimed the title with a strong all-around performance across the three disciplines, finishing in 1:14:28. In the open race, Andrew Grant took the top spot with a time of 1:07:54.

In the team race, it was a tight finish as the duo of Maurice & Madeline crossed the line just a couple of minutes ahead of the next best team.

2024 Europe Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships Balikesir

Elite action took place in Balikesir, Turkey, with both junior and senior Scottish athletes competing.

Following his victory at the last Europe Cup in Cork, Ireland, Hamish Reilly continued his good run of form this season, putting together a great performance in the heat of Turkey, finishing in 6th position in the elite men’s race and silver medallist in the U23 Europe Championships.  Reilly was also part of the GB Relay team who took 3^rd behind Italy and Germany.

In the elite women’s race, Sophia Green was back in action in what appears to be her final race of the 2024 season. She started strong with a really solid swim, coming out of the water in third position. As large bike packs formed, it came down to a running race, and Green crossed the line in 29th place.

Isla Hedley and Millie Breeze (National Triathlon Centre) were on the start line in the junior women’s race, and Millie made the front pack, but Isla was involved in a crash, so it became a day of chasing for Isla. Both ran strongly off the bike with Millie taking 5^th, with Isla closing out her race in 27th position. In the mixed junior relay, both athletes were involved helping the team to 7^th overall.
