Firsts all round! | Weekend Review 24-25 August

27th Aug 2024 | Written by Pamela Sneddon

It’s been a couple of weekends of outstanding performances from Triathlon Scotland members, whether it’s an athlete making the podium in an event or completing their first multisport event.

Gullane Beach Triathlon

The 28th Gullane Beach Triathlon took place on Sunday, with over 100 participants starting on the open-water beach and then racing over the standard distance, consisting of a 1500-metre two-lap sea swim, a 42 km bike ride, and a 10 km run.

The overall winner in the Open category race was Craig Dale, who completed the course in a total time of 2:18:22, nearly two minutes faster than the first-place finisher in last year’s event. In the women’s race, it was Victoria Reid who matched her performance from last year and took the overall victory in a time of 2:35:06, almost three minutes faster than her time from last year.

World Under 23 Aquathlon Championships

What a time to be alive for Joel Lange, who has trained at the National Triathlon Centre in Stirling over the last four years. After heading out to the Multisport World Championships in Townsville, he had his sights set on claiming the Aquathlon World Championship title.

Representing New Zealand on the big stage, Lange delivered a sterling effort in both the swim and run, earning his first-ever international medal in multisport as he stormed to victory in the Under 23 category, being crowned world champion.

Lange has just finished his time at the University of Stirling and the National Triathlon Centre and will now spend at least a year training and racing down under. We wish him the best of luck.

British Super Series – Eton

The latest British Super Series event took place in Eton as an Eliminator format on Monday and it proved to be an exciting and competitive event, showcasing the talents of young and senior Scottish athletes against the rest of those in the UK.

In the Youth B / Junior / Senior open category, Alex Robin and Struan Bennet demonstrated impressive consistency across the board. Both athletes successfully navigated through the heats and subsequent rounds, with Alex securing a commendable 3rd place in the Junior division and 5th overall, while Struan finished 10th overall.

The Youth B / Junior / Senior female category saw equally strong performances. Millie Breeze led the charge, claiming 1st place in the Junior race and an impressive 2nd overall. Sam McInnes and Jessica Turnbull also delivered solid results, finishing 5th and 6th, respectively. In the B final, Jessica Heeps topped the rankings, earning her 1st place and placing her 5th overall in the Youth B/Junior division.

In the Youth A female category, Juliette Kidd put up a valiant effort, finishing 3rd in the B final, which placed her 17th overall. Meanwhile, the open race was fiercely contested, with Israel Noble leading a strong contingent in the A final. Israel secured a podium finish in 2nd place, followed by Oscar Chirnside in 10th, Euan Murphy in 12th, and Ruairidh Stirling in 18th.

Weekend recap 17-18 August

The Kilkerran MOK Triathlon Series – Race 3

The second year of the Kilkerran Mull of Kintyre Triathlon Series concluded with the last of three separate events in three different locations within South Kintyre.

Although the swim had to be cancelled on the day of the final event, Scottish multisport athletes were not deterred from competing, as they instead lined up for a duathlon event consisting of a run-bike-run format.

Dominic Sharkey backed up his win from last year, taking victory once again in 2024 in the Open category race, delivering a comprehensive display across all disciplines. In the women’s event, Claire McCraw posted the fastest bike split of the day, which gave her a significant time gap heading into the run, allowing her to secure an impressive win. In the relay race, The Fast & The Furious proved they were the best team on the day, crossing the finish line with a 45-second gap over the next best team.
