No Hanging Around | Weekend Review 7-8 September

9th Sep 2024 | Written by Pamela Sneddon

There was no hanging around this weekend on the racing front, with Scottish athletes getting their swim, bike, and run act together to race in both Scotland and different parts of the globe.

French Grand Prix Quiberon

French Grand Prix racing continued with the penultimate stop on the calendar in Quiberon.

We had a large contingent of young elite Scottish athletes taking part in the race, with all of the females starting in the Division 1 race and all of the men in the Division 2 race. French Grand Prix racing is known for its fast and furious spectacle, and this was a great opportunity for all the athletes to race against some top-tier competition.

In the women’s Division 1 race, Jessica Turnbull (Stade Poitevin Triathlon) was the woman on form as she finished in 27th position. Iona Miller (Vals Du Dauphine Olympic) followed in 34th, Maisie Aubrey (Stade Poitevin Triathlon) came over the line in 55th, and Sam McInnes (Valence Triathlon) finished in 70th.

In the Division 2 race, Tom Tyler put together a good performance and finished in 19th (Stade De Reims Triathlon), while Cameron Kerr (Stade De Reims Triathlon) finished in 68th.

It was racing on UK soil for Scotland’s Beth Potter at the weekend as she lined up with plenty of fans ready to get behind her for an exciting day of racing around the city docks of Canary Wharf.

With Potter known more for her endurance prowess, this short, sharp racing was there to put her to the test. From the start, the pace was on, and Potter found herself with some chasing to do early on. Despite her best efforts, it was not her day overall to mix it with the leaders, and she finished the race in 10th position.

The Live Borders Triathlon Series hosted their penultimate race of the season over the weekend, with the Peebles Duathlon welcoming athletes to the historic Borders countryside. This annual event saw a number of athletes complete the sprint distance event.

Michael Paxton stormed the Open category event on the day, sailing away with the victory after a strong bike leg in a time of 1:10.41. He was followed by Ciaran Dogherty in 1:11.45 and Christopher Watters in 1:12.38.

In the women’s race, Nathalie Brohan proved she was the strongest on the day and won the race in 1:19.41, with Sarah Russell following her in second in 1:22.55 and Christine Mulholland in third in 1:25.37.

Now, we look forward to the climax of the series with the final race, the Peebles Triathlon, taking place in the same location on September 23.

The Wee Beltie Triathlon

The Wee Beltie Triathlon was back, and a number of Triathlon Scotland members headed to the popular event to see how they could perform on the day.

In the open category of the Wee Beltie race, regular racer Craig Dale took the top spot, showing his consistency across all three disciplines to win in 2:11.30. Sam Gurling finished behind him in second in 2:17.14, and Cameron Burt finished in third in 2:21.49.
