Outstanding Contribution: David Stewart – Monifieth Triathlon Club

16th Dec 2024 | Written by Luke Howard

David Stewart is your 2024 Triathlon Scotland Award winner for the Outstanding Contribution Award.

David Stewart, a long-term supporter of triathlon, has been representing the sport at national and international age-group events for 15 years. Known for his enthusiasm, wit, and readiness to offer advice to new triathletes, David is always thinking of new ways to make triathlon fun and appealing to club members.

David was one of the first members of Monifieth Triathlon Club after its formation in 2010. He joined the committee soon after and took on the role of President in 2016. David then guided the club through the next seven years before stepping down in late 2023. Although he never intended to hold the position of President for so long, he was persuaded to stay on due to his original ideas and quiet but firm leadership. David led the club throughout the challenging Covid period while maintaining a busy job as a GP and university teacher.

David remains active in the club, coaching and participating in all activities. He began his coaching journey in 2012 and has been coaching club members since then. David holds a spin bike qualification and has single-handedly run a spin class for the club on Saturday mornings from October to March for many years, ensuring everyone can train regardless of the weather.

David leads by example, creating fun and quirky events for the club. These have included muddy trail running at night, an online bake-off during social distancing, and a fun murder mystery event. He also introduced newer members to longer-distance cycling through his “Biggest Bike Bash,” which ran alongside the shorter but still challenging “Biggish Bike Bash.” David has been a key committee member overseeing the Monifieth Triathlon Festival, which has hosted several National Championships and remains a favourite in the triathlon calendar.

David has been the backbone of Monifieth Triathlon Club for the better part of a decade. His leadership has significantly benefited the club and the sport, particularly in maintaining a strong triathlon presence in Dundee and contributing to organising National Championships at Monikie Country Park for many years. David never seeks the limelight, but his outstanding contribution to the club and the broader triathlon community is being recognised with this award following his decision to step down from leading M3.

David Stewart’s dedication and leadership have left an indelible mark on Monifieth Triathlon Club and the triathlon community. His innovative events, coaching, and unwavering support have inspired many and ensured the club’s continued success. As he steps back from his leadership role, the club and the broader triathlon community celebrate his remarkable contributions and the lasting impact of his efforts.
