The Mull of Kintyre Standard Distance Triathlon, the last event in the 2025 Kilkerran MOK Triathlon Series, once again attracted triathletes to the stunning coastline of the Kintyre Peninsula. Competitors travelled from as far away as Wakefield, Oban, Glasgow and Edinburgh, all recognising that the well organised event doesn’t fail to deliver and is well worth the journey.
For anyone who hasn’t yet taken part in the Mull of Kintyre Triathlon Series, this is a race not to be missed. With its stunning coastal scenery, well-marshalled swim, fast, flat bike routes, and a welcoming, spectator-friendly atmosphere, it is a triathlon experience that is truly worth giving a go. Whether you’re a seasoned competitor or a first-time triathlete, the event promises a rewarding challenge and memories that will last long after crossing the finish line.
Held in Machrihanish, the race challenged solo competitors and relay teams alike.
- Swim: The 1,500 m open-water sea swim was situated in a small bay. Careful planning and with six safety kayaks and a safety boat, the organisers ensured a safe swim for all.
- Bike: Competitors then enjoyed a fast, flat 41 km cycle, ideal for high-speed racing and personal bests. The largely contained route, with only 6 km on public roads, offered uninterrupted tarmac perfect for both experienced riders and those looking to push their pace.
- Run: The challenging 10 km out-and-back run may have been tough, but the competitors were rewarded with sweeping views down to the coastline and out into the ocean.
Transition, nestled between the Ugadale Hotel and the Old Clubhouse Pub and Restaurant, proved to be a spectator-friendly hub. Friends, family, and supporters could watch athletes switch disciplines, then enjoy food and drinks while cheering them across the finish line – a perfect spot for post-race celebrations and relaxation.
From start to finish, the event was filled with energy, camaraderie, and scenic beauty. The calm, clear waters of the sea set the tone for a strong swim, while the fast, flat bike leg provided opportunities for athletes to push themselves and enjoy the stunning coastal views. The run into the countryside offered spectators multiple vantage points to cheer competitors on. Volunteers and supporters created a welcoming and lively atmosphere, and the setting meant that post-race celebrations could be enjoyed in comfort with food, drinks, and scenic surroundings. Many athletes remarked that the combination of smooth racing, spectacular scenery, and friendly support made this one of the most memorable events of the season.
A heartfelt thank you goes to Campbeltown Running Club for their meticulous planning and dedication in making the Standard Distance Triathlon a smooth and memorable experience. Thanks are also due to the many volunteers whose energy and enthusiasm ensured the event ran safely and successfully, and of course to the participants who gave their all, bringing the race to life with determination and sportsmanship.
Sponsored by Kilkerran Single Malt, Campbeltown Community Windfarm Fund, West Coast Motors, The Kintyre Trust, and Co-Op Campbeltown, the event enjoyed strong local support and volunteer involvement.
