Legend of the Month | Fran Robinson

25th Aug 2025 | Written by Pamela Sneddon

Q: Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you got into triathlon?
A: I’m a registered nurse. I first became interested after dislocating my knee and being inspired by the Brownlee brothers during the London Olympics. I enjoyed swimming and cycling, and triathlon felt like a natural fit.

Q: Do you remember your first race?
A: My first was a duathlon at 19. I’ll never forget getting off the bike and thinking, “How am I supposed to run another 5K?” But I surprised myself on the run and that motivated me to keep going.

Q: What was your first large triathlon?
A: The Leeds Open Standard Triathlon with the World Triathlon Series. It was chaos, I had a panic attack in the swim but got through it. Running down the blue carpet, where the pros had raced, was a proud moment.

Q: What role has your club, TriWorks played in your journey?
A: The club has been incredibly supportive. Even though I sometimes feel at a lower level, they constantly encourage me and remind me I can do it. Being surrounded by like-minded people has made a huge difference.

Q: What advice would you give to someone new to triathlon?
A: Just give it a go. Don’t be intimidated by people with fancy kit, you don’t need all the latest gear. Basic kit is enough, just enjoy it. Take one step, and you’ll be surprised where it leads.

Q: How do you balance nursing with triathlon training?
A: It’s challenging. I work four long shifts a week, but I’ve become more disciplined. Now I sometimes train twice a day, which I never thought possible. I follow the club’s routine: turbo sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays, swimming on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, long rides at weekends, and some running, though running isn’t my favorite!

Q: Do you have any pre-race rituals?
A: A good playlist to get in the zone and a pre-race cry! It helps release the stress, and funnily enough, it often leads to my best performances.

Q: What’s your favorite post-race treat?
A: Definitely pizza and Coca-Cola (and maybe a pint!).

Q: What does being named Triathlon Scotland’s Legend of the Month mean to you?
A: It means a lot. I didn’t expect it. The club has made me feel so welcomed and supported. To be recognised and to give something back feels really special.

Congratulations, Fran, on being our Legend of the Month!
