30th Apr 2024 | Written by Pamela Sneddon

To celebrate UK Coaching Week, we are speaking to some of the great coaches from around the country who inspire us every day.

Carys Murrison is 15 year olds and recently qualified as a Foundation Coach. She currently coaches weekly swim sessions at Fusion Triathlon Club, where she has been a member since she was 8 years old.

How did you get into triathlon?

I got to into triathlon when my mum took me and my brother to a Fusion Easter camp. I fell in love with the sport and never looked back!

Why did you decide to take the step into coaching?

I decided to take the step to coaching as a way to give back to the club that has given me so much. Coaching also allows me the platform to share the sport of triathlon and the love I have for it.

I did some volunteer coaching as part of my Bronze Duke of Edinburgh and found that I really enjoyed it, which helped me decide to take the step to start coaching officially.

You have recently completed your Foundation Coach qualification. How did you find the course and training?

I took part in the Foundation Coach course in Carluke earlier this year and really enjoyed it.

I found that the tutors opened up my eyes to different coaching approaches which can suit different athletes better. The tutors were also kind and encouraging to help me identify my weaknesses and support me to overcome them.

What do you enjoy most about the coaching you do?

The thing I enjoy most about coaching is encouraging and supporting athletes to become the best version of themselves, both in triathlon and everyday life, by showing them skills which transfer into both areas.

Another part of coaching that I love is simply being there for my athletes as a person that they can come to for advice.

Do you have any future ambitions for your coaching journey?

I my coaching journey I later hope to go onto become a group coach and further develop my skills and knowledge on how to best support my athletes.

Why should others consider becoming a coach?

Others should consider becoming a coach if they have the desire to help others become the best they can as not just athletes and people through the help of the sport of triathlon.
