Legend of the Month | Paul Haslam
23rd Sep 2025 | Written by Pamela Sneddon
Paul Haslam, originally from Chesterfield, has transformed his life from a casual sports enthusiast to a decorated GB Age Group triathlete – all starting with a Couch to 5K challenge in 2018.
Haslam lost touch with fitness after starting a career in the coal industry and raising three sons with his wife, Karen. By his late 50s, Haslam was nearly 15 stone and inactive, until Karen announced she was starting Couch to 5K. He joined her reluctantly and never looked back.
What began as a challenge to run 5K soon led to triathlons. In June 2019, Haslam completed his first sprint triathlon at Lochore Meadows, placing third in his age group. By 2022, he represented GB in the European Age Group Championships in Poland, earning a silver medal in the 60-64 category – a feat he never imagined.
Haslam now has 17 GB starts under his belt, including podium finishes at European and World Championships. His accolades include:
- Silver in the 2023 Europe Triathlon Standard Championships Madrid (converted to duathlon)
- Silver in the 2024 Europe Triathlon Powerman Middle Distance Duathlon Championships Alsdorf
- Two bronze medals at the 2024 Europe Triathlon Championships Vichy (sprint and standard distance)
- Bronze in the 2025 World Middle Distance Duathlon Championships Multisport Alsdorf
- Silver in the 2025 European Standard Distance Triathlon Championships Istanbul
We are sure that elusive gold medal is not far away!
His success story includes overcoming setbacks like COVID disruptions and injuries, and he credits the support of Karen, Perth Triathlon Club, and his coach for his continued drive.
