Race Report | 2024 Scottish National Sprint & Mixed Team Relay Championships

16th Jul 2024 | Written by Pamela Sneddon

The ever-popular combined Scottish National Sprint Distance & Mixed Team Championships took place on Saturday, 6th July, with a whole host of Scottish clubs from around Scotland coming together to participate in an exciting event, whatever the weather.

Scottish National Sprint Championships

It started as a breezy Saturday morning in Monikie Country Park for our 2024 Scottish National Sprint Distance Triathlon Championships. The race never fails to accommodate triathletes of all abilities, and a field of over 230 participants toed the start line.

The adult race was first to go at 9 a.m., with the race split into two waves. With the water at a low temperature and under the limit of just a trisuit swim, wetsuits were compulsory on the day.

In the women’s race, Grace Campbell (Strathclyde University Triathlon Club) matched her exact swim time from last year, stopping the clock at 9:58, with Jessica Heeps (West Lothian Triathlon Club) following her out of the water not far behind in 10:09. Third out of the water was Nicole Campbell (TrYthan Triathlon) in 10:35.

On the bike, it was Miriam Gilbride (Fusion Triathlon Club) who stormed through the field in 36:52, finishing the bike leg alongside Cecilia Bosman (Edinburgh Triathletes), who also had a strong ride. They both headed out of transition two at the front end of the race, with Heeps just in front of them for the 5 km run ahead.

On the run, there was an exciting tussle for the lead between Heeps and Bosman. The two athletes clocked exactly the same run split, but a fast second transition from Heeps gave her a gap big enough to hold onto by the end. She finished in 1:10:18, with Bosman taking second in 1:10:29 and Gilbride finishing third in 1:11:07.

In the men’s race, Tom Tyler (National Triathlon Centre) exited the water in 9:24 with a lead of over 10 seconds over Cameron Kerr (Stirling Triathlon Club), who was followed closely by Israel Noble (Triathlonworkx) a further three seconds behind Kerr.

Out onto the bike, Tyler was a man on a mission, opening his lead further and riding one of the quickest bike splits of the day in 33:15. The fastest bike split of the day came from Angus Millar in 31:36, over 90 seconds faster than the next best athlete. Tyler managed to enter transition two in first place, with multiple Scottish champion Craig Dale clawing back time to head onto the run in second position.

Out on the run, Tyler would cement his place as the overall winner, running nearly a whole minute quicker than anyone else and crossing the finish line in 1:00:08. Kerr managed to run through to second place and take the Scottish title, crossing the line in 1:02:15. Noble also put in a fast run to climb his way onto a podium spot in third, finishing in 1:02:54.

Scottish Mixed Team Relay Championships

The Mixed Team Relay was on the cards for the afternoon as Scottish clubs came together to race. The event continues to grow at a rapid pace and brings an opportunity for athletes to come together in a race.

There were over twenty teams entered on the day of the race, with a large proportion affiliated with Triathlon Scotland and eligible for the Scottish title.

TrYthan Triathlon started the race strong in leg one, finishing in 16:59. Edinburgh Triathletes had some catching up to do, coming over the line 1 minute 53 seconds down, with TriWorks Edinburgh a further 17 seconds back.

TrYthan extended their lead with their second leg, which had the second fastest split in the round, and it looked like they would back up their victory from last year.

Into leg three, the gaps stayed very much the same, with the three teams holding their positions. Team A Bunch of Teuchters recorded the fastest split in leg three, making up some places.

In the fourth and final leg, TrYthan benefited from their early efforts to stay in front and take the tape. TriWorks Edinburgh took second spot, with Edinburgh Triathletes staying in third.

TrYthan claimed the Scottish title in an overall time of 1:15:47.

Congratulations to all of the teams that took part in the event.

A big thank you to the event organisers M3 – Monikie Triathlon Festival, and all of the spectators and volunteers who helped out on the day.
