The 2024 Triathlon Scotland Annual Awards brought together the community to celebrate the remarkable achievements and contributions of individuals and clubs throughout the year. From inspiring performances to outstanding volunteer efforts, these awards highlight the dedication and spirit that drive the sport forward. Read about their fantastic achievements below.

Club Spirit Award: Duncan Birse – TriWorks Edinburgh

Duncan Birse’s journey into race directing began in late 2022, culminating in the creation of the East Fortune Duathlon in March 2023. His debut event, supported by TriWorks Edinburgh and Triathlon Scotland, received rave reviews and won Event of the Year 2023. Duncan’s dedication continued in 2024, expanding the East Fortune Duathlon and adding new events, including a University Championship and a standard distance duathlon at Floors Castle.Duncan’s efforts have significantly boosted opportunities for children and visually impaired athletes. His personal touch extends to designing event materials, with his wife Alice also playing a crucial role. Thanks to Duncan’s hard work, TriWorks Edinburgh has achieved financial stability and the East Fortune Duathlon will host the British Sprint Duathlon Championships in 2025.

Coach of the Year (Over 25): Norman Lucey – Grangemouth Triathlon Club

At 60, Norman Lucey took on the challenge of becoming a Foundation Coach, driven by his passion for the Grangemouth Triathlon Club. Known for his enthusiasm and motivational spirit, Norman focuses on junior members, organising engaging events to make training enjoyable. His coaching prowess was highlighted by helping a junior member with autism complete his first race. Norman’s dedication proves that it’s never too late to start something new.

Young Person of the Year: Finlay Brill – Monifieth Triathlon Club

Finlay Brill stands out as a dedicated athlete and coach at Monifieth Triathlon Club. Starting in 2018, Finlay quickly advanced through the ranks, eventually coaching both adults and children. At 17, he has already completed the Youth Ambassador Coaching Qualification and aims to further his coaching credentials. Finlay’s approachable and humorous coaching style endears him to all club members, and his contributions extend to managing the club’s social media and serving as a youth representative on the committee.

Performance of the Year (Elite): Beth Potter

Beth Potter’s transition from swimming and athletics to triathlon has been nothing short of remarkable. After starting triathlon in 2017, she quickly ascended to the top, making history by competing in two sports at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. In 2024, Beth excelled across multiple formats, including the E World Triathlon Championships and the Paris Olympics, where she earned bronze medals in both the individual and mixed relay events. Her achievements this year solidify her status as an elite athlete and a role model.

Performance of the Year (Age-Group): Alan Bremner – Newhaven Harbour Triathlon Club

Alan Bremner’s 2024 season was extraordinary, marked by victories in Ironman Lanzarote and the Alpe d’Huez triathlon, and a third-place finish at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. His success stems from a rigorous training regimen and a commitment to excellence. Beyond his personal achievements, Alan actively supports his club members and encourages new triathletes through events like the SwimBikeRun aquathlon.

Inspirational Performance of the Year: Dylan Donaldson – Grangemouth Triathlon Club

Dylan Donaldson’s journey from a beginner swimmer to a youth triathlete in under a year is inspiring. Despite learning disabilities, Dylan thrived at Grangemouth Triathlon Club, supported by dedicated coaches and a welcoming community. His first triathlon, completed with the help of club member Norman Lacey, showcased Dylan’s determination and the club’s inclusive spirit. Dylan’s story highlights the potential for everyone to participate in triathlon.

Technical Official of the Year: Linda Lucey – Grangemouth Triathlon Club

Linda Lucey’s commitment as a Regional Technical Official (RTO) has been invaluable in ensuring the smooth operation of triathlon events across Scotland. In 2024, Linda officiated at 11 events, demonstrating her dedication and expertise. Her approachable nature and willingness to mentor new officials make her a respected figure in the triathlon community.

Event of the Year: Irvine Sprint Triathlon – Ayrodynamic Triathlon Club

The Irvine Sprint Triathlon, organised by Ayrodynamic Triathlon Club, provided an ideal entry point for beginners with its clear waters and supportive environment. The event saw 180 participants, including novices, juniors, and a visually impaired para-triathlete. The positive feedback and high return rates underscore the event’s success.
