The BIG Finale | Weekend Review 21-22 September

This weekend saw the final race on the Scottish Championships calendar, while major championship racing also took place in both the short course and long course versions of the sport.

Scottish National Duathlon Championships

We finished out Scottish Championship racing calendar with a bang at the weekend at the 2024 Scottish National Duathlon Championships.

Over 100 athletes took to the start line to race around the stunning grounds of the University of St Andrews. Coming out on top in the overall Open race on the day was Rory Treharne and in the female race it was Joanna Patterson who backed up her win from last year to take another title.

Europe Triathlon Championships Vichy

Loughborough-based Scottish athletes Cameron Main and Hamish Reilly took on the challenge of competing against the best in Europe on Sunday afternoon in Vichy, France.

The race started with a fast pace as top performers from various countries pushed hard in the swim. Main matched the leaders, exiting the water in fourth place. He then settled into the small lead bike group that formed early on. Reilly, slightly further back in 13th, later had to withdraw from the race.

Main looked comfortable throughout the bike leg before transitioning to the run. He clocked a 30:25 10km run split to finish in a well-deserved 12th place, marking one of his best major championship finishes to date.

Tom Williamson of the National Triathlon Centre in Stirling, was also on the start line in the PTS5 men’s category.

Williamson delivered an impressive performance, combining a strong swim-bike effort with a solid run. He lost only two places during the 5km loop, securing third place overall and his first major championship podium.

We also had a handful of Scottish age-groupers competing in the event, with Paul Haslam winning bronze in both the sprint and standard events. Mike Goddard took his first ever GB gold in the sprint event.

Peebles Triathlon

The Live Borders Triathlon Series hosted their final event of the season over the weekend, with the Peebles Triathlon (including – Come & Tri, Junior and Sprint race) welcoming athletes to the historic Borders countryside.

This brings and end to the series for 2024 and a big thank you must to those who put on the series, from the race organisers, officials, and to the volunteers.

Women’s Ironman World Championships

Nikki Bartlett, a member of Triathlon Scotland, delivered a memorable performance by securing 5th place at the VinFast IRONMAN World Championship on Sunday.

After overcoming a potentially career-ending injury last year, she had a remarkable day in the south of France as the 37-year-old moved up from 29th place after the swim to eighth off the bike and then achieved an incredible fifth place during the marathon.

Bartlett said after the race “I came in hoping for a top 10 and the dream would be the top five. That’s something I’ve always wanted as a pro in my career, and I got it. I’m chuffed to bits. I still think I’m going to wake up and it’s going to be race day!”

Academy Round Up

It was a great couple of days for some of the Triathlon Scotland Academy members with our latest training camp bringing everyone together for a good weekend of training, Rory Treharne winning the 2024 Scottish National Duathlon Championships, and Daisy Gildea winning the Eian Prentice Memorial Trophy at the Scottish Swimming Awards.
