Motorcycle Officials provide valuable support at triathlon events. Their role is to support Technical Officials and the Event Organiser by riding during the cycle stage of a triathlon, to report incidences of drafting and dangerous riding. They can also provide support and assistance to competitors and event volunteers, should there be an emergency on course.
Prospective Motorcycle Officials must be aged over 25 hold an advanced riding certificate awarded by the Institute of Advanced Motorcyclists, or RoSPA or equivalent, and have access to a motorcycle.
Motorcycle Official Training
British Triathlon has worked with the National Escort Group (NEG) to develop a course specifically designed to train volunteer Motorcycle Officials for their role at events.
There is a three-step process to becoming a qualified British Triathlon Motorcycle Official as outlined below:
All Motorcycle Officials are required to hold an advanced riding qualification (such as an IAM or RoSPA qualification) before applying to complete the course.
To apply to become a volunteer Motorcycle Official please enrol on the “Motorcycle Officials 2025” course and email your supporting documentation to officials@britishtriathlon.org.
Once you have completed the knowledge tester, you will be sent your Motorcycle Official starter pack from British Triathlon. You will also be allocated a mentor, and you will attend two events where you will shadow a qualified Motorcycle Official. After your two shadows, provided that you performed successfully and feel confident to proceed, you will be signed off as qualified, and ready to be allocated to events across Scotland. You will also receive a complimentary Triathlon Scotland Essential membership.
Insurance
When acting as a Motorcycle Official you will be covered by the British Triathlon fleet insurance policy, on a fully comprehensive basis.
To ensure that you are covered by this policy it is vital that the details relating to your bike (e.g. model, engine size, registration number) are held by British Triathlon and that either you or the Event Organiser complete the Event Registration Form prior to an event taking place. The completion of this form enables us to confirm with our insurance company that you are attending an event on behalf of British Triathlon – without this form being completed before the event takes place we cannot guarantee that you will be fully covered.

Expenses
Motorcycle Officials in training can claim expenses of £50 at two shadow events, claimed from Triathlon Scotland. Once qualified, Motorcycle Officials receive reimbursement for expenses incurred for attending events, and are claimed directly from the Event Organiser, in accordance with the British Triathlon expenses policy below.
