Event Crew Role Profiles

Here’s a bit of an outline of the potential roles available for our upcoming British U20’s Festival at Strathclyde Park on Sunday 4 September 2016

On the day you may move between multiple roles and on registering we do ask if there is a particular role you’d like to do or you think you’d be good at. You will have a team leader assigned to your role and they will give you a full briefing of your role on the race morning and be your first point of contact throughout the day.

Registration

There are various events taking place throughout the Sunday and there will be a host of young athletes coming in to register.

At registration our young athletes will pick up their race number and get a bit of information about the venue. – race starts times, run and bike routes, transition opening times, refreshments, facilites, forgotten kit etc… You’ll need to be clued up about the venue and the event (by us, don’t worry), and help to confirm final entry numbers for each event.

We will need friendly faces to meet and greet our athletes and get them sorted for a good race.

Swim Support

A few volunteers will be positioned at the very start of the race, at swim support. Your role is to help make sure everything goes to plan at the start of each ‘wave’ and to assit with herding the swimmers and have them ready to move from the waiting area in their waves. (if there are a lot of competitors, of varying abilities, setting athletes off in smaller “waves” is safer and makes for a more enjoyable race)

Thankfully we don’t require you in the water, water safety will take care of that, but you will be on hand just to make sure everything goes… swimmingly.

Transition Support

You’ll be located in the heart of the triathlon as our young athletes transition from swim to cycle and cycle to run.

You’ll be safety checking for bikes and helmets, helping to rack bikes, and helping ensure the transition area is free from any trip hazards. Only athletes and coaches are allowed in this area and you may be helping to keep it that way by checking accreditation.

Bike/Run Marshals

Across the Bike and Run course our young athletes will come flying through in multiple waves throughout the day. We need you to be our eyes and ears out on the course to ensure the safety of our athletes as well as park spectators / park users.

You will be armed with whistles and flags to help direct the athletes as well as to communicate down the course to give your fellow marshals a heads up to close crossing points. You of course are also very much encouraged to cheer on all the athletes too!

Aid Station

A few volunteers will be needed to hand out water to our young athletes on the run course, while making sure the hydration stations are fully stocked. You’ll be a friendly face along the course and well appreciated by thirsty athletes. We may also need you to help clear the raceway of disposed cups to help keep Scotland beautiful.

Finish Support

Volunteers on finish support will greet and congratulate our young athletes as they finish, remove timing chip, and offer water. You’ll also help to make sure that only athletes and officials are around this area, and you may need to encourage very tired athletes to move away from the finish line to allow others to cross. You might even get to hold the finish line tape!

Traffic Control and crossing points

With a lot of cars coming in and out of the park, it can get a bit crowded. We will need a couple of volunteers out on radios managing this traffic. Maybe not the most glamorous of jobs but a really important one none the less. The last thing we want is an athlete’s race day beginning with a stressful traffic jam!
